II. Software Requirements for Sending Encrypted Email with Mozilla Thunderbird (Part II. of V.)


As mentioned in the previous article, the Enigmail plugin for Thunderbird works in conjunction with the GnuPG software to send encrypted email. The GnuPG software performs the behind-the-scenes encryption and decryption of email, whereas Thunderbird (through the Enigmail plugin) allows you to read and send encrypted email.
Think of it this way: just as you need Windows to run a a program, you need GnuPG in order to send and receive encrypted email.
