Utility to Convert Mozilla Bookmarks into Wiki-formatted Text File

Building on the stylesheet submitted by Juliano Ravasi Ferraz, I wrote a quick WinBinder GUI program that lets you convert you Mozilla Firefox bookmarks into a Wiki-formatted text file.



Installation:
Pre-Usage:
Open the unmork.html file in Firefox, and use the button to export your Bookmarks to the intermediate Bookmarks RDF format.

Usage:
In the ConvBmarks program, open the Bookmarks RDF file, and a file called output.txt will be automatically written to the directory in which the program exists.

Open this file. It will be in Wiki text format.

If someone wants to make a full installer for this (using NSIS or something else), it would be great.

Purpose:
This program converts Mozilla Bookmark RDF files to Wiki syntax files.
It uses an XSL stylesheet written by Juliano Ravasi Ferraz.

Requirements:
* Windows
* WinBinder extension for PHP 5 - http://www.hypervisual.com/winbinder/index.php
* PHP 5 - http://www.php.net
* LibXSLT and LibXML extensions / built-in support for PHP 5

Pre-installation:
Unzip the zip file and open the unmork.html file in Mozilla Firefox. Use the 'Export Bookmarks' button (and ignore any warning) to export your Firefox bookmarks to a Bookmarks RDF file. Remember where this file is saved.

Installation:

You need PHP 5 and WinBinder, plus the libxml and libxslt extensions for it to work.
This will not work with PHP 4.

You have two options:
* Install the entire WinBinder + PHP 5 package from http://www.hypervisual.com/winbinder/index.php and then manually add in the php_xsl.dll file to the PHP 5 extensions dirctory
* Just download the WinBinder dll file, and install PHP 5 file yourself by unzipping the PHP 5 zip file to a directory. Copy the WinBinder dll to the PHP 5 extensions folder.

Make sure you have the php_xsl.dll extension in your extensions directory before proceeding.

If you don't have it, you can download the whole Windows PHP 5 zip file from http://www.php.net, and locate the php_xsl.dll file in that file.

Then make sure the extensions section of your php.ini file looks like this:

extension_dir = "ext/" ; Directory in which the loadable extensions (modules) reside.
extension=php_winbinder.dll
extension=php_xsl.dll

Running:
If .phpw extensions are already associated with the php-win.exe file that comes with the WinBinder distribution,
simply double click on this (convrc.phpw) file.

If it is not, first associate .phpw files with the php-win.exe program, and then double click on it.

You can also invoke it via the command line (if you need to add debug messages to be outputted):
C:\WinBinder\PHP\PHP5\php.exe C:\WinBinder\Code\convbmarks\convbmarks.phpw

Usage:

Once the program is running, use the button to open the Mozilla RDF file which you exported.
In the same directory where this script exists, a file called output.txt will be saved.
If you need your bookmarks converted to a different format, simply modify the XSL file as necessary, or drop me a note (although I cannot promise anything before hand.)

Programming Note:
I am new to using WinBinder, so this program is not written as well as it should be.
For example, instead of using identifiers such as 'IDC_BUTTON1002', I should use something like 'BUTTON_OPEN_RCFILE'.

Last night, my husband and I attended a party and silent auction for the local school. The event was a fund raiser for the Scholarship Fund, and the Old Town Manor was a very proud sponsor.
The general idea of the Fund is to raise fund to send 2 underprivileged kids through the Montessori school program, and to provide opportunities to other children who may not have them. The event rose over $15,000 and increased awareness of the Fund itself. A lot more has to be done and last night was just the beginning.
And here’s the stuff – at the silent auction, "yours truly was the winner of a pair of the pair of Jimmy Choo strappy stiletto heels." the manager said to all the attenders. It is hard to believe that someone like me, who lives and dies in her old school now, would get the pair of Jimmy Choo’s. Every woman at the party coveted those shoes.
When i went to the platform to get my shoes, the manager said:" the pair of shoes is the most beautiful in the world, not because of the shoes itself, but the donor. "With these words, he looked into a young lady sitting in an armchair in the first line. And the girl became the focus of all the eyes immediately. She said she has been sitting in the armchair for ten years, her feet had become shrink and twisted, so whenever she went across the jimmy choo store, she dare not look inside. She had been loving this jimmy choo’s for a long time, a few months ago her boyfriend bought this shoes for her as a gift in her birthday, and said she is the most beautiful girl in this jimmy choo. She cannot help but cry at that moment. She said that this jimmy choo is the most valuable for her, because it is this jimmy choo strappy stiletto heels that gave her the courage to live on as a common girl, to enjoy all the beautiful things as other girls. She hope this jimmy choo would also give courage to the one who buy it n the auction and to these children.
Maybe I will never wear them. Maybe they will decorate the mantle. Maybe they’ll sit in the Jimmy Choo box in a Jimmy Choo bag only to be taken out at parties so we can giggle over them like schoolgirls. Maybe I will wear them to my brother’s wedding, if he ever finds someone who will put up with him.
Whatever happens to them is not important. The fact that Jimmy Choo’s have been used for a good cause, and I had something to do with it, is worth every penny I paid for them. That’s the good stuff.

i am interested in bookmarks.rdf, ie i want to get my bookmarks out of firefox as a file in rdf-format.
i tried unmork.html (and associates) (of course locally), but i did not get it running, i got js-fatal exceptions etc.
could it be, that this does not work anymore with fresh ff (1.5.0.6)?

any ideas?
(i can describe in more detail, what the errors were, if someone is "interested")

Hello Jay,

I have some experience with XSLT, it was what impressed me the most in XML, and I decided to study it deeper.

RDF is actually a messy collection of objects. Everything is under the root entry with pointers to who are its children. It was a bit tricky to find how I could properly renest all folders and bookmarks via XSLT to ressemble the real folder tree. Now this stylesheet serves as an example if someone wants to transform RDF into some other XML document (perhaps more straightforward than the raw RDF).

Thanks for the link, btw. Your XSLT stylesheet really does the trick. You must be quite familiar with XSLT; it seems to be the perfect solution for transforming RDF XML documents.
