AOL email accessible via open IMAP server?

Gideon007 from the MozillaZine forums mentioned that AOL email can be accessed by an open IMAP server in Germany: imap.de.aol.com .

Has anyone tried this with Mozilla Mail or with Thunderbird? Does it work?
A recent article in BetaNews claims that AOL has opened their email system to third party programs, as part of their shift in strategy to make their service more flexible.

Another option for Thunderbird / Mozilla Mail users who want to access their AOL email via those programs: you can use external programs as middlemen between your favorite email program and AOL, thus enabling you to access your AOL email with a program other than the AOL client.

Two options that I have heard of are enetbot and AOL2POP.

Kind of late coming to this comment, but in case anyone is still tracking this, I can't get this to work for me... it rejects my authentication attempts.

I'd suggest that it works for mcsmurf because gmx.net is a German location... they seem to be filtering out (or in) by the network you're coming from. Just a guess, though.

Hope this becomes available for the rest of the world one of these days.

yes this works :) (tested it); you dont have to be logged in with AOL, access with any ISP works
